Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced India’s commitment to the development of “sustainable and responsible” artificial intelligence (AI) regulations at the ongoing Global Partnership on AI (GPAI) Summit.
Modi emphasized India’s role in AI development and urged global stakeholders to adopt the collaborative AI development approach outlined in the G20 Delhi Declaration. He stressed India’s commitment to ethical AI use, mentioning the National Programme on AI and the upcoming AI mission, which will focus on education, health, and agriculture sectors.
Under the AI mission, India plans to enhance AI skills in tier-II and -III cities, promote AI applications, and establish the national AI portal. Modi highlighted the importance of human and democratic values in AI development, emphasizing inclusivity, ethics, and effectiveness.
Japan’s vice minister for policy coordination, Hiroshi Yoshima, supported India’s leadership role in AI regulations. Union Minister for Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw mentioned India’s efforts to reach a consensus for a global regulatory policy document with delegations from over 28 participating nations by the end of the summit.
Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for IT, highlighted India’s digital progress over the past nine years, transforming lives, democracy, and governance. He noted the country’s position as one of the fastest-growing innovation ecosystems, with a significant number of startups and unicorns created in recent years.
