2. | Normal Trading Session | 9.15 a.m. – 3.30 p.m. |
3. | Post-closing Trading Session | 3.30 p.m. – 4.00 p.m. |
Let’s understand each season one by one.
-
Pre-opening Season
The pre-opening session begins at 9:00 a.m. and lasts until 9:15 a.m. It’s also broken down into three segments. You can submit orders to purchase or sell stocks for a short time during one of these segments. Let’s take a look at the specifics of the pre-opening session.
Segment 1 ( 09:00 am to 09:08 am)
You can make orders to purchase or sell different stocks on the equity market during these 8 minutes. You can also change or cancel any orders you may have placed. When the regular trading session starts of share market opening time is 09:15 a.m., the orders placed during this portion of the pre-opening session are prioritised in the order queue.
Segment 2 ( 09: 08 am to 09:11)
You are unable to place new orders, change existing orders, or cancel any orders during these four minutes. This part is required in order to do price matching. The process of price matching entails evaluating demand and supply. When the market opens at 09:15 a.m., it aids in determining the ultimate values at which various shares will be exchanged.
Segment 3 (09:12 to 09:14)
This 3-minute period serves as a transition between the pre-opening session and regular trading hours. It acts as a buffer, making the transition to the normal trading session easier. You cannot initiate, amend, or cancel any orders during these three minutes.
-
Normal Trading Season
From 09:15 a.m. until 03:30 p.m., this is referred to as the nonstop trading session. During this period, you have complete freedom to trade, place orders to buy or sell shares, and amend or cancel your buy or sell orders.
A bilateral order matching method is used during this window of share market timings. This implies that every sell order is matched with a buy order at the same share price, and each buy order is matched with a sell order at the same share price.
-
Post Closing Session
When the normal trading session of share market closing time is 03:30 PM, this session begins. The post-closing period, which lasts until 4:00 p.m., is divided into two Segments.
Segment 1( 03:3o pm to 03:40 pm)
The closing prices of equities are computed during these 10 minutes by using the weighted average of stock prices traded between 03:00 PM and 03:30 PM. The closing prices of indices such as the Sensex and Nifty are derived using the weighted average prices of all the stocks included in the index.
Segment 2 ( 03:41 pm to 04:00 pm)
You can still place buy and sell orders during this 20-minute period. However, orders are only verified if there are enough buyers and sellers in the market.
-
Muhurat trading (Special Season)
On public and national holidays in India, the stock market is usually closed. The stock market, on the other hand, is open for a one-hour session on Diwali every year. This is known as the Muhurat trading session, and it has been in existence since Diwali is considered a lucky day. This session’s timing and date vary from year to year.
Note
Even though the Indian stock market is open from 9.15 a.m. to 3.30 p.m., chosen firms’ shares can be ordered even after the market closes. In addition, when the market closes for the day, transaction of Mutual Funds NAV takes place, with prices set by the final value of the stocks as of closing time.
How to invest in the stock market?
For normal clients, stock market investments are only available through brokerage firms. Orders for particular securities can be placed online, and they can be processed by a stockbroker with direct investing access with a T+2 settlement buffer period.
Due to the general volatile nature of stock markets, investments must be undertaken only after a thorough examination of firms listed on the BSE/NSE. You can seek for a reputable stock investing platform that offers comprehensive analysis of various firms as well as the ability to acquire stocks quickly and easily.
